CLASS TITLE: Food Service Assistant
DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under supervision, to assist in preparing and serving foods, to clean kitchen equipment and utensils, and to do related work as required.
ESSENTIAL/TYPICAL DUTIES
Assists in preparing vegetables, fruits, and other foods for cooking
Prepares or assists in preparing salads, desserts, sandwiches, and beverages
Sets up for serving and serves to students
Assists in cleaning and storing dishes, utensils, cafeteria equipment, and food supplies
Cleans work areas and disposes of refuse
Operates dishwashing machine
May assist in taking monthly inventory
Performs related duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge of:
Principles of sanitation
Basic kitchen utensils and equipment
English communication skills
Ability to:
Learn the methods of preparing and serving foods in large quantity
Learn to operate cafeteria equipment
Understand, and follow oral and written directions
Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform assigned duties
Work cooperatively with others.
TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Demonstrated ability to read, write, and speak at the level required for successful job performance.
BARGAINING UNIT: Operations Support Services (OSS) Unit
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Physical condition necessary to maintain a rigorous work schedule; hearing and speaking to exchange information; seeing to perform assigned duties; standing for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment; kneeling, bending at the waist, and reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally, to retrieve and store supplies and serve food; lifting heavy objects.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in an indoor or outdoor kitchen or cooking environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
