  • Training of Trainers, "Moving Theory into Action: Educational Support Groups for Children Impacted by Substance Abuse"
    January 30 & 31, 2012 (8:00am-4:00pm)

    Substance abuse impacts student health, safety and academic success. This trainer of trainers professional development event will provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to implement and train others in effective group work strategies with students struggling with substance abuse issues. Participants will learn about substance abuse trends for adolescents in Santa Clara County, how to identify the signs and symptoms of substance abuse and how to structure and facilitate prevention and early intervention support groups. Discussions, role plays and vignettes will be utilized to ensure that participants become familiar with the policies and theories related to best practices in this area. The third day of training will be dedicated to reviewing the above, providing technical support as well as discussing strategies specific to participant needs.

  • Media & Brain Development (8:30am-2:00pm) September 23, 2011
    Young people today spend over 53 hours a week in front of screens. It is more important than ever that we have critical conversations about the powerful role of media in our lives. Dr. David Walsh will help us learn more about the latest discoveries in brain science with up-to-date research and data to explore how media shape norms, attitudes and behaviors and how media influence child and adolescent development during important “windows of opportunity” where young can develop the capacity to be critical consumers and creators of digital media. Merve Lapus from Common Sense Media will demonstrate the hands-on tools that parents and educators can use to help this generation develop a strong sense of digital citizenship.
  • Bully Prevention Training (8:00am-4:00pm) October 10, 2011
    Social cruelty and bullying negatively impact student health and academic success. The focus of this training is to promote safer school communities by assisting schools in understanding, formulating and implementing school safety strategies that address bully behaviors. A Coordinated School Health approach will be utilized in accomplishing the above. Topics will include bully prevention and intervention, strategies to enhance a healthy school community, and bulling and the law.
  • Comprehensive Safe School Plans (8:00am-3:30pm) November 7, 2011
    This one-day training provides schools/districts with a review of California Education Code requirements for developing or updating SB 187 Comprehensive Safe School Plan. Understanding the 7-Step process for safe school planning, reviewing/revising the Safe School Plan for State Compliance, and recognizing the important role that school climate and culture play in safe school will be the focus of this training. Technical assistance will be offered for site or district staff.

  • Asset Development
    May 20, 2011

    Location: Santa Clara County Office of Education
    Time: TBD

    This training will provide schools with strategies to enhance a positive school climate. Clay Roberts, a national expert in the area of asset development, will share interventions that have proven to be effective in schools across the state. Project Cornerstone will also highlight local programs, initiatives and data to assist schools in creating a healthy school environment. This course is geared towards teachers, school nurses, counselors, psychologists, school administrators and others who work with students in a school setting.

  • HIV/STD
    May 3, 2011

    Location: Santa Clara County Office of Education
    Time: 8am-3:30pm

    This one-day training provides a more in-depth look at STDs/HIV including trends, transmission, consequences, STD/ HIV connection, and appropriate risk-reduction messages for this population. Available at this training will be free STD-specific resources, including “STD 101 for Teens” PowerPoint, and Making the Connection Between STDs and HIV Lesson Plans. This course is geared towards teachers, school nurses, and other staff that teach mandated HIV/AIDS education and/or comprehensive sexual health education in middle and high schools, especially those who work with at-risk youth in alternative education settings.

  • Bullying and Harassment in Schools
    April 14, 2011

    Location: Santa Clara County Office of Education
    Time: 10am-11am

    The Understanding, Preventing and Responding to Bullying and Harassment in Schools webinar will highlight the most pressing compliance and security issues for employers, particularly in light of the Department of Education's new anti-bullying guidelines, and provide practical recommendations for safeguarding students and responding effectively to incidents of bullying and violence at schools. Some of the key topics to be addressed include: anti-bullying protections, bully-related conduct that is prohibited, consequences of bullying, case law addressing liability for bully-related conduct and best practices. This program will be presented by Kevin O'Neill, Senior Counsel with the Learning Group of Littler Mendelson and Erroll Southers, the Managing Director of TAL Global.

  • Bullying Prevention and Education Symposium
    March 14, 2011

    Location: Santa Clara County Office of Education
    Time: 8:00am-3:30pm

    The focus of this symposium is to promote safer school communities by assisting districts in understanding, formulating and implementing school safety strategies that address bullying. A Coordinated School Health approach will be utilized in accomplishing the above. Topics will include: overview of bullying, county data on prevalence, strategies to enhance a healthy school community, LGBTQ youth and bullying, and bullying and the law.

  • Suicide Prevention, Self Injury and Crisis Intervention
    January 27 & 28, 2011

    Strategies relative to suicide prevention as well as suicidal interventions with self injurious youth.
